A small, slow leak that you can contain or shut off can often wait until morning. A leak that keeps spreading, cannot be shut off, is near electrical equipment or is reaching another unit usually should not wait.

Finding water late at night is stressful, and it is not always obvious whether the problem is urgent. A few simple questions can help you decide whether to call a 24-hour plumber in the Bronx now or schedule a visit for the next day.

Can You Stop or Contain the Water?

This is the most useful question to ask first. If the leak is coming from a sink, toilet or appliance and closing its shutoff valve stops the water, the immediate risk is much lower. A drip that a bucket can catch is also easier to manage overnight.

If water keeps flowing after you close the nearest valve, or you cannot find a valve that works, the leak may keep causing damage while you sleep. That is a good reason to call for help right away.

Signs a Leak Should Not Wait

Some situations are worth treating as urgent even if the water seems slow at first:

  • Water near outlets, an electrical panel or appliances
  • Water coming through a ceiling or wall
  • Wastewater backing up from a drain or toilet
  • A leak you cannot locate or shut off
  • Water that may be reaching a neighbor below

A stain or damp spot that appears suddenly and grows can also point to a hidden leak, though it does not always mean a pipe has failed. Watching whether it spreads over an hour or two can tell you a lot.

If You Decide to Wait

If the water is stopped or contained, a few steps can help overnight. Keep the fixture or valve turned off, leave a container under any drip and move belongings out of the way. Avoid using fixtures that drain into the same line if a backup is involved.

Check the area again before bed and first thing in the morning. If anything changes, such as a faster drip, new water or a new smell, it may no longer be safe to wait.

If the leak is coming from a water heater, keep away from any gas or electrical parts and do not try to adjust or drain the unit yourself. A leaking water heater is worth a call even if the drip seems small, because the cause is hard to judge from the outside.

Apartments and Shared Buildings

In an apartment, tell your super or building management about any leak, even one that seems minor. Water can travel between floors, and staff may need to check the unit above or below or reach a shutoff you cannot access.
