If your dishwasher stopped draining right after a new garbage disposal was installed, a common reason is that the dishwasher inlet on the new disposal is still sealed. Many disposals come with a small plug inside that inlet, and it has to be removed when a dishwasher drains through the unit.
That is not the only possible cause, though. A kinked drain hose, a connection that was set up differently or a clog in the line can also stop the dishwasher from draining. Since the problem started after new work, the disposal connection is a good place to begin.
How the Dishwasher and Disposal Are Connected
In many kitchens, the dishwasher drain hose runs to the side of the garbage disposal. When the dishwasher drains, its water flows through the disposal and into the kitchen drain line.
Some disposals are shipped with the dishwasher inlet closed off, so they can also be used in kitchens without a dishwasher. If that plug is not removed during installation, the dishwasher has nowhere to send its water. It may finish its cycle with water still standing in the bottom.
Other Possible Causes
A dishwasher that will not drain after a disposal swap may also be linked to:
- a drain hose that got pinched, kinked or crushed during the work
- a hose that was not connected securely or is routed in a way that lets water flow back
- debris that came loose during the work and blocked the hose or inlet
- a clog in the kitchen drain line beyond the disposal
- a problem with the dishwasher itself that happened to show up at the same time
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A plumber can check the hose, the inlet and the drain before deciding on the fix.
What to Do in the Meantime
Avoid running the dishwasher again until the problem is checked, since more water may back up into the dishwasher or sink. If water is standing in the dishwasher, do not reach into the disposal to look for the cause.
Do not try to open the disposal, remove parts or work near its electrical connection yourself. Removing an inlet plug or reconnecting a hose should be done with the unit safely shut off by someone who knows the setup. If water is leaking under the sink, place a towel or container under it and keep the area dry.
If You Rent or Manage a Building
In Bronx apartments, a new disposal is often installed by building staff or a contractor hired by the owner. Renters should report a draining problem to the super or landlord so the person who did the work can check it.
