A faucet may squeal or whistle when water is forced through a narrow or loose spot, such as a worn part inside the faucet, debris in the aerator or a valve that is only partly open. The sound often changes as you turn the handle, which is a clue that the flow path is being squeezed somewhere.
A noisy faucet is usually not urgent, but the sound can be a sign of wear that may lead to drips or leaks later. It also helps to know that the noise is not always coming from the faucet itself.
Common Reasons a Faucet Makes Noise
Several things can cause a squeal, whistle or hum when the water runs:
- a worn, loose or hardened washer or seal inside the faucet
- a cartridge or valve part that has started to wear
- mineral buildup or debris that narrows the water path
- a clogged or damaged aerator at the tip of the spout
- a shutoff valve under the sink that is not fully open
The type of faucet matters. Older faucets with rubber washers may squeal as those parts wear. Many newer faucets use cartridges, which can make different sounds when they wear or collect debris. Because designs vary, the exact cause is hard to know without looking at the faucet.
When the Noise Is Not the Faucet
Sometimes the sound comes from the pipes or another part of the plumbing and only seems to come from the faucet. A loud bang when you shut the water off quickly, often called water hammer, is a different problem from a steady squeal.
If several fixtures in the home make noise, or the sound happens only when another fixture is used, the cause may be in the supply piping, a valve or the water pressure. That kind of problem may need a broader check than a single faucet repair.
Why It Is Worth Fixing
Worn parts that make noise may also stop sealing well. Over time, that can turn into a dripping spout or a leak around the handle. Debris that causes noise can also reduce flow.
Fixing the cause early may be simpler than waiting until the faucet starts leaking. A plumber can tell you whether the faucet can be repaired with new parts or whether replacement makes more sense.
What to Avoid
Try not to force the handle or tighten parts with tools to stop the sound. Too much force can damage the faucet. Do not take the faucet apart while water is still flowing to it. In Bronx apartment buildings, renters should report a noisy faucet to the super or landlord rather than opening it up.
