A refrigerator ice maker or water dispenser usually needs a cold water supply line, a shutoff valve that is easy to reach, and a secure connection to the back of the fridge. The exact parts depend on the refrigerator model, its installation instructions and where the nearest cold water line is in the kitchen.

This small line is easy to forget once the fridge is pushed back into place. But it carries water under pressure all the time, so how it is set up affects both how well the ice maker works and how likely a hidden leak is.

The Basic Parts of the Connection

Most refrigerator water hookups include a few key pieces:

  • A cold water source: often tapped from a nearby line, such as under the kitchen sink or through the wall behind the fridge.
  • A shutoff valve: lets you turn off water to the fridge without shutting off the whole kitchen.
  • A supply line: tubing or a braided hose that runs to the back of the refrigerator.
  • A water filter: many refrigerators have one built in, and some setups add one along the line.

The refrigerator maker’s instructions usually list the type of connection and the water pressure range the unit needs. Following those instructions helps the ice maker and dispenser work as designed.

Common Problems With Fridge Water Lines

A few issues come up often:

  • a line that is kinked or pinched when the fridge is pushed back
  • a loose connection that drips slowly behind the unit
  • a shutoff valve that is hard to reach, stuck or leaking
  • an older line that has become brittle or cracked over time

Signs of trouble may include water on the floor near the fridge, a soft or warped floor, slow ice production or a dispenser that barely flows. Slow ice or weak flow can also come from a clogged filter or a problem inside the refrigerator, which is a job for the maker or an appliance technician.

Planning a New Hookup or Replacement

If you are getting a new refrigerator with an ice maker, or moving the fridge to a new spot, plan the water connection ahead of time. Ask where the line will come from, where the shutoff will be and how the line will be routed so it is not crushed.

In Bronx apartments and co-ops, check with the landlord, board or management before adding a new water line, since some buildings have rules about appliance hookups.

Safe Habits

Know where the fridge shutoff valve is. When moving the refrigerator for cleaning, pull it out slowly so the line does not stretch or snap. If you see water behind it, turn off the shutoff if it is easy and safe to reach, and keep away from wet outlets and cords.
