When you call a plumber after hours, describe what is happening, where the water or problem is, whether you have been able to shut anything off and how to reach the property. Clear details help the plumber judge how urgent the problem is and what to bring.

Late-night calls often happen in a rush, and it is easy to leave out something important. A few minutes of preparation makes the conversation faster and more useful when you need plumbing help around the clock.

Describe the Problem Clearly

Start with what you see and hear. Is water dripping, spraying or pooling? Is a toilet or drain backing up? Is there no water at all, or no hot water? Mention any smell, sound or change you noticed before the problem started.

Say where it is happening, such as under the kitchen sink, behind a toilet, through a ceiling or near the water heater. If water is coming from above, say so, because the source may be in another unit.

It also helps to say how long it has been going on and whether it is getting worse. A leak that started an hour ago and keeps growing is different from a slow drip that has not changed.

Share What You Have Already Done

Let the plumber know whether you closed a fixture valve or a main shutoff, and whether that stopped the water. If you tried a valve and it would not turn, mention that too.

If you used any products in a drain, say which ones. That information matters for the safety of whoever works on the drain next.

Give Details About the Property

Access can affect how quickly work can start once a plumber arrives. Useful details include:

  • Whether it is a house, an apartment, a mixed-use building or a business
  • Which floor the problem is on and how to get into the building
  • Whether a super or building manager needs to let someone in
  • Whether a building shutoff may be needed

In an apartment, it is a good idea to let your super or building management know before or right after you call. They may need to open a basement, a utility room or another unit.

Ask the Right Questions

It is reasonable to ask how the visit will work and what may affect the cost, such as the type of repair and the parts involved. Arrival timing can depend on conditions, so ask what to expect instead of assuming a set time. A good plumber will also tell you what to do while you wait.
