A shower drain usually clogs because hair tangles with soap scum and other residue until water can no longer pass through easily. Small objects, such as bottle caps or razor covers, and a blockage farther down the drain line can also be the cause.

Shower clogs are one of the most common drain problems in homes and apartments. Knowing what tends to cause them can help you prevent the next one and decide when a clog needs more than a quick fix.

Hair and Soap: The Usual Pair

Hair on its own can slip through a drain. The trouble starts when it mixes with soap, shampoo, conditioner and body oils. These products can leave a sticky film inside the pipe that hair grabs onto. Each shower adds a little more until a solid mat forms.

This often builds up just below the drain cover or in the curved trap under the shower. That is why many shower clogs start as slow draining long before the water stops.

Other Things That Can Block a Shower Drain

Hair is not the only cause. A shower drain may also clog because of:

  • small items like caps, cotton swabs or pieces of soap
  • sand, dirt or grit washed off after the beach or work
  • thick products, such as oils, scrubs or hair treatments
  • a drain cover or stopper that catches debris
  • a restriction farther down the line that the shower shares with other fixtures

If water rises in the shower when a nearby toilet is flushed or a sink is used, the blockage may be beyond the shower itself. That does not mean there is a sewer problem, but it may need a closer look.

What You Can Do and What to Avoid

If you can see hair on top of the drain or under a removable cover, pulling it out with a gloved hand may help. Stop running water if the shower is close to overflowing.

Avoid pouring harsh chemical drain cleaners into a shower drain. Chemicals can sit in standing water, splash on skin and eyes, and make later repair work riskier. Never mix drain products. If you already used one, tell the plumber before any work begins.

When a Clog Needs More Than a Quick Fix

It may be time for help if the water will not go down at all, the clog keeps coming back within a short time, or other drains are slowing at the same time. A plumber can find where the blockage is and decide how best to clear or repair it.

A drain cover with a built-in hair catcher can help prevent future clogs. Cleaning it often keeps hair from reaching the pipe.
